See-Through Scanners Installed In US Airports

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Due to new security arrangement, passengers in US airports can now have the choice of either to be checked-in by physical pat-downs or go through security scanners which can see through their bodies and reveal details of their body underneath. The new security arrangement has been installed in 10 US airports for start. This is being revealed by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

A random selection of travelers getting ready to board airplanes in Washington, New York's Kennedy, Los Angeles and other key hubs will be shut in the glass booths while a three-dimensional image is made of their body beneath their clothes.

The booths close around the passenger and emit "millimeter waves" that go through cloth to identify metal, plastics, ceramics, chemical materials and explosives, according to the TSA.

While it allows the security screeners -- looking at the images in a separate room -- to clearly see the passenger's sexual organs as well as other details of their bodies, the passenger's face is blurred, TSA said in a statement on its website.

Amazing V-12 Four Stroke Paper Engine

This amazing V-12 four stroke origami is a pure genius at work. I used to pride myself on my Paper Mache skills back in secondary school those years. But nothing beats my imagination as the level of skill and finesse put together to achieve this awesome feat of art and engineering skills.

Built by a self-employed Montreal man named Yee, the Origami V-12 is a paper engine that pumps just like real engines (with the help of electrical wires, a resistor, a motor and a battery holder). It looks complicated because it is: One V-12 engine consists of 195 sheets of fine-printed patterns. From those sets, 1,978 pieces are used in total. And it only weighs 3.2 lbs when finished. This makes your 1,000-piece puzzle look like a piece of cake.

Read the full details here and see whether you can take up the challenge of building your own paper engine. The Origami V-12 engine is available for online for $110

Scandyna Alien Audio Speakers Will Daze You

These speakers sure look alien and out of this planet, but that doesn’t subtract from their sound qualities and high aesthetics. If you are into space things, needless to say these exotic looking speakers should be a must-get for you.

The amp has 50 pumped up watts per channel, so when it's time to turn up the Wu Tang or M.I.A., you don't need to flinch as you dial up the volume — this system has some serious punch. In the high ranges, you can hear the smallest details in the music, and with the excellent imaging, instruments and sounds pop out all over the room. The soundstage is solid, too, so you don't have to be front and center to enjoy the beautiful sound quality. The bass is tighter than a drum, although somewhat thin in the deep end — hey, you can't have everything. Overall, this is one of the best-sounding small speaker systems I've heard in some time.

These speakers don’t come cheap; so you must be prepared to shell out about $1550 if you want to lay your hands on these nice gadgets.

Xerox Self-Erasing Paper

Some documents are so secret you’ve got to keep them safe from even yourself, and that’s why Xerox invented self-erasing paper. The info fades away after 24 hours, so only your photographic memory can keep the info locked in. This is all due to a molecule that creates the print under ultraviolet light and then readjusts after 24 hours or under heat to make it disappear.

This paper is still under-going research at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center.

INBED: The 2D Virtual Girlfriend

Monday, May 19, 2008

Are you lonely and don't have a girlfriend? Do you want an imaginary girlfriend to sleep beside you on your bed? Then INBED seems to be your ideal bedmate. Though this sounds spooky enough to me, if you are really lonely and need to have somebody lying beside you, then you don’t need to look further.

INBED works by having a projector on the ceiling beam an image of a lady down in that empty space on a double bed.

What makes the INBED impressive is that it has infrared sensors that can detect the position of the live person in bed, and adjust the virtual person accordingly. In other words, the virtual girlfriend will adjust her position to snuggle with you, spoon with you if you lie on your side, and even react to kisses by burying her face in a pillow.

I have a feeling somebody out there is lonely and in dare need of a companion, real or imagined. Will this fulfill the desire for a real or 3D girlfriend? Well, as the saying goes, 2D girlfriend is better than none.

Enviromentally Friendly Lingerie With Solar Panel

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Now we are in the age in which nothing surprises us again. But when it comes to the issue of solar bra, one is still caught unawares. An environmentally-friendly lingerie may be something you need to spice up your imagination. If it looks good, then lets wear it.

The eco-friendly Solar Power Bra integrates a whole lot of green into one complete sexy package. Aptly colored with a green shade, the Solar Power Bra features a waist-mounted solar panel which powers a small, chest-mounted electronic billboard, or pretty much any other gadget you feel like modding onto the bra.

Not to be outdone in other eco-friendly categories, the bra even offers a pair of reusable drinking cups (no pun intended), which not only offers a way for the wearer to reduce the amount of aluminum cans and plastic bottles they use, but also adds to the woman’s (or man’s, if you’re into that sort of thing) bust size. These reusable containers can be hidden away in a special pocket on the bra’s cups.

A time will come and has come when we will start wearing disposables clothes and shoes. Who wants to wash clothes and pollute the eco-systems with chemicals?

Jupiter: World's Most Expensive Desktop Computer

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

This is it. Now you've got a very good reason to be extravagant. That is, if you really can afford it. Can you shell out £375,000 on a desktop PC? I can hear you say "Not if it is gold-plated". I can assure you this one is more than gold-plated.

Bug Bat: Electrocutes The Annoying Insect

Monday, May 12, 2008

This Bug Bat gadget had me really smiling to myself. Sure it is payback time to those stubborn insects that make it their pleasure to annoy you. Insect of just killing them, just electrocute them. Sweet revenge!

Whether you are cooking in the kitchen or relaxing in your veranda, you are sure to have insects making some zing zang around you. Sometimes it is too much bother attacking them with insecticides or brooms. Just have some fun while they roast.

Each time a bug carelessly flies or touches the “strings” of the Bug Bat, it will most definitely go straight to insect heaven as your ears pick up the electric crackle of death.

If you are feeling sporty and want to go insect-hunting, you can pick up this nice gadget for less than $20. The excitement you will get out of it will make the cost insignificant. It is time to read your environment of those disease-carrying bugs.

It's simple to use - when a fly or mosquito is annoying you, you flick the switch on the racket handle to on, and go hunting. When you’re ready to strike, you depress the button on the handle to instantaneously arm the racket strings and swing the racket, much as your granddaddy might have swung a rolled-up newspaper.

If you touch the fly or mosquito with any part of the racket face during your swing, then ... POW!!!!! The most satisfying aspect of hitting your target, apart from ridding the world of an unwanted pesky insect, is the noise - the sound of a kill generated by the zap is incredibly satisfying, particularly if the little blighter has been tormenting you for hours.

- Dual time zones
- Two alarms
- Countdown chronographs
- Barometer
- Thermometer

Smart Gym Gear: Cooling Shoe, Ear Sensor and Smart Bra

For those of us who are gym rats, we need to give claps to technology for these. New tools under development will soon make sure there's no missed step, poor form, or lagging pace you don't know about in real time.

Ear Sensor
The e-AR from Sensixa is a cufflink-sized device that tucks behind a runner's ear like a Bluetooth headset to measure shockwaves through the skeleton. It calculates stats like step frequency, acceleration, and stride.

Smart Bra

Even small breasts can bounce up to 3 inches during exercise, causing significant discomfort. Researchers in Australia are using motion capture to design a bra that dynamically adjusts cup and strap stiffness as a woman moves around.

Cooling Shoe
Avacore is developing a cooling shoe based on the company's CoreControl glove currently used on NFL sidelines. Why? Rapidly cooling hands and feet is a safer and more efficient way to prevent overheating than water buckets or mist fans.

Fagor TP-2006 X Flat Toaster: Make a Toast, Get a Burn

The Fagor TP-2006 X Flat Toaster comes with a cool design. It doesn't look ordinary. Besides, you can toast larger items on it. But then, you better be careful with it, for you may be asking for more than toasted bread if you fail to concentrate while using it.

Why now?
- The surface is lined with extremely hot wires that are very well exposed. There is no way to cover it except with the toast.
- You have to manually flip over your toast, as both sides cannot be heated at once.

This is definitely no toaster to be used by children or somnambulist adults.

Volkswagen Cars That Can Park Themselves Remotely

The VW Park Assist Vision (PAV) will asset driver to remotely park their Volkswagen cars. The driver does not even need to be in the car. Apart from this, the Volkswagen PAV can park the car perpendicularly like in parking spots or in parallel as in along the street.

This means, if you can park in the tightest of spots, without worrying about how you are going to open your door to get out, because you won't be in the car while doing the parking. This sounds exciting. This is the sort of things James Bond movies are made up.

The hardware involved includes ultrasonic sensors, electro-mechanical steering gear, and a 2GHz computer. Once the car is nice and ensconced in its spot, the engine shuts off and the doors are locked. All these will be done via remote control.

Asus Plans to Build Laptop Casings with Bamboo

Acer To Launch First Smartphone

Acer will likely launch its first smartphone near the end of this year or early next year and it will be a Microsoft-based device, the president of the company said Wednesday.

Smartphones will represent as much as 10 percent of Acer's revenue in the next few years, said Gianfranco Lanci, president of Acer, at the company's first quarter investors' conference in Taipei.

People on the lookout for such a device should remember Acer, the world's third-largest PC vendor, owns several brands now, including Gateway of the U.S. and Packard Bell in Europe. Lanci said any smartphone launched by the company could enter the market under any of the brands it owns.

Acer's quick entry into the smartphone market comes largely due to its NT$9 billion (US$297.3 million) agreement last month to purchase handheld device maker E-Ten Information Systems of Taiwan.

E-Ten has developed and sold several smartphone models over the past several years, including its Windows Mobile 6.0-based Glofish smartphone with GPS (Global Positioning System), in addition to other handheld electronic devices such as GPS devices and pocket PCs.

Scan to eBook With Plustek OpticBook 4600 Book Scanner

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

ant to photocopy that book? We have a better idea. Scan it with the newly introduced Plustek OpticBook 4600 Book Scanner. You might want to ask me why you should scan it rather than photocopy it. The reasons are plain simple:

- No paper required - as users can save the scanned file onto the hard drive or any portable storage media.
- Scan and save – besides printing out hard copy, users can choose to scan and save the file to any digital format.

This scanner has a resolution of 1200 dpi (interpolated to 24000) dpi and has a Scanning speed as stunning as 3.2 second per page. Besides, Plustek OpticBook 4600 comes with an optional stand. This thoughtful design elevates the scanner by 122mm with an 18.8 degree angle thereby generating the best scan result even when you are scanning a book with hard and bulky cover.

Create an eBook from a book instead of generating bulky papers. This is a great idea for libraries, as scanning a book is more convenient for both the students and the library than photocopying in this highly digitalised world.
